🌾 Joseph – A Faith That Carries Through
Devotions from the Life of a Dreamer with Character
⛓️ 5. Sold by His Brothers – Valued by God
When people want to get rid of you – and God still has a plan
────────────────🌾────────────────
👣 Introduction
What do you do when the very people from whom you expect acceptance reject you?
When those who should know you overlook your heart?
When you are not only ignored but actively hurt and pushed away?
That is exactly what happened to Joseph.
His brothers – driven by jealousy, fear, and wounded pride – sold him.
Not enemies. Not strangers.
His family.
And as Joseph, bound and frightened, was led into a foreign land, his brothers believed they had eliminated the problem.
But they were wrong.
What was the end for humans – was only the beginning for God.

📖 Devotion
Genesis 37:28
“Then Midianite traders passed by; and they pulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the cistern and sold him for twenty pieces of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.”
The dust was still stirred when Joseph realized this was no bad dream.
The hands of his brothers, the ones who had just pushed him into the pit, reached for him again – but not to save him.
They reached to sell him.
Joseph heard their voices.
How they bargained.
How they discussed.
How they set the price.
Twenty pieces of silver.
That was what their brother was worth.
For Joseph it must have felt as if a piece of his heart collapsed within him.
He searched the faces of his brothers for a spark of doubt, for remorse –
but he found nothing.
No backward glance.
Only indifference.
As the Midianites led him away, he saw the silhouettes of his brothers grow smaller.
The people he had played, laughed, and eaten with –
they turned around and left.
But God did not leave.
And while Joseph was led through the heat of the desert, another realization grew in him:
When all human securities crumble, only One remains who truly holds.
Joseph likely did not understand it then.
Maybe he cried.
Maybe he shouted.
Maybe he asked God a thousand times, “Why?”
But God was not silent out of indifference.
He was silent because He was leading.
Joseph was sold – but in truth he was being positioned.
To Egypt. To the place where God would shape him and later use him as a deliverer.
A place Joseph would never have entered voluntarily.
Sometimes God leads us on paths we would never choose.
Sometimes through doors that hurt.
But even when people let us fall – God catches us.
Not always where we were,
but always where we need to be.
Because God does not measure your worth by what people decide about you,
but by what He has placed inside you.

💡 Thoughts – What does this mean for us?
-
Rejection is not the end of your story.
-
People may underestimate you – God never does.
-
Your worth is not based on human approval.
-
God can even use the wrongdoing of others to lead you to the right place.
-
Even when you are “let go” – God holds on to you.
────────────────🌾────────────────
💎 What can we learn from Joseph?
-
People can block your path, but not your calling.
-
God remains faithful, even when everyone else walks away.
-
Pain is not a sign of God’s absence.
-
God continues writing, even when others try to steal your chapter.
-
Not every painful path is a wrong path.
────────────────🌾────────────────
👣 Practical steps for you
-
Allow yourself to take the pain seriously.
Hurt is real – you may bring it to God. -
Speak God’s truth over your worth.
Read Scriptures that strengthen your identity (e.g., Isaiah 43:1–4). -
Separate God’s actions from human behavior.
Rejection from people does not mean rejection from God. -
Ask God for His perspective on your situation.
Ask: “Where are you leading me?” -
Surround yourself with people who build you up, not break you.
────────────────🌾────────────────
💭 Practical questions for reflection
-
When have I felt “sold” or worthless?
-
Who has determined my worth – people or God?
-
Which situations in my life might have been “God’s positioning”?
-
Which pain do I need to give to God today?
-
Where do I need courage to trust God’s plan despite hurt?

🙏 Prayer
Dear Father in heaven,
sometimes rejection hits me deeper than I want to admit.
I feel worthless, forgotten, or unwanted.
But you say that I am precious in your eyes.
Help me not to measure my worth by what people do or say.
Give me strength to release hurt and trust you,
even when the path is dark and confusing.
Lead me to where you want me,
and shape me into what you want to use.
Thank you that you remain, even when others leave.
Amen.
────────────────🌾────────────────
🔑 Key thought of the day
People can let you fall –
but God never lets you go.
────────────────🌾────────────────
🌿 Blessing to close
The God who held Joseph in a foreign land,
who guided him when no one stood up for him,
who strengthened him when his world fell apart –
may this God be with you.
May He fill your heart with renewed courage,
show you your unshakable worth,
and lead you step by step
into His good future.
May the God who never sells you,
never overlooks you,
and never gives up on you,
bless you.
Amen.
