🌾 Joseph – A Faith That Carries Through
Devotions from the Life of a Dreamer with Character
🧭 6. Joseph in Egypt – A Stranger, Yet Faithful
When people want to get rid of you – and God still has a plan
────────────────🌾────────────────
👣 Introduction
Joseph stood in a place where he never wanted to be.
A foreign land. A foreign culture. A language he did not understand.
He had no family anymore, no rights – only memories of what once was.
And right there, where everything familiar fell away, something happened that we easily overlook:
Joseph lost his home – but not his foundation.
He was a stranger in the land, but not a stranger in God’s presence.

📖 Devotion
Genesis 39:2–3
“And the LORD was with Joseph, so that he prospered … And his master saw that the LORD was with him …”
Joseph stood in Egypt like a young tree, uprooted from familiar soil and planted in foreign ground. He didn’t know the language, didn’t understand the culture, and had no idea what the future would bring. And yet—right in the midst of this foreignness, in the midst of all this uncertainty—something happened that was stronger than the loss of his home: God was with him. Not as a fleeting feeling, not as a vague hope, but as an invisible, sustaining reality.
While Joseph worked in Potiphar’s house, he may have hardly noticed what was happening within him. But others did. Potiphar noticed. The servants noticed. Something about Joseph was different. There was a peace that didn’t match his situation. A reliability that could not be explained. A posture that could not come from human strength. It was as if a quiet glow rested on his life – not loud, not showy, but unmistakable.
The Bible describes it so simply yet so deeply: “The LORD was with Joseph.”
Not: Joseph was strong, and therefore everything succeeded.
Not: Joseph was talented, and therefore he rose.
No – God was with him. And because God was with him, even the foreign land became a place where blessing could grow.
Perhaps Joseph had moments when he wondered why he was even there. Perhaps there were evenings when he thought about his family and could not hold back tears. Perhaps there were days when his heart felt heavy and his faith quiet. But even when his feelings wavered – God’s nearness did not.
And slowly, almost unnoticed, the place of his captivity became the place of his formation. Joseph learned to be faithful even when no one was watching. He learned to serve without expecting recognition. He learned to trust God even when nothing in his surroundings seemed to support that trust. The foreign land became a school of the heart, and Joseph became a man whose character was more deeply rooted than ever before.
We often see only the foreignness, the coldness, the uncertainty. But God sees the becoming. For His presence is not tied to places. He is with us—in familiarity and in foreignness, in beginnings and in loss, in joy and in the decision to remain faithful. Joseph lived as if God were with him. And God showed that such a posture is never in vain.

💎 What can we learn from Joseph?
-
Faithfulness is a choice, not an emotion.
-
God’s nearness is our true home.
-
Your character matters more than your circumstances.
-
God works in the hidden before He acts in the visible.
-
You can grow in a foreign place – perhaps even more than at home.

💭 Practical questions for reflection
-
Where do I currently feel “foreign” or out of place?
-
Where might God be working on me in the unseen?
-
What small steps of faithfulness can I take today?
-
Where do I need the reminder: “God is with me – here and now”?
-
How can I be a bearer of blessing in my own “Egypt”?

🙏 Prayer
Dear Father in heaven,
you know the places in my life where I feel foreign.
You know where I lack courage, where I feel alone,
where I ask myself: “Am I in the right place?”
But you say:
“I am with you.”
Help me trust you precisely where I understand nothing.
Give me a heart that remains faithful – in small things, in hidden spaces, in quiet moments.
Let me sense that even my “Egypt” is not beyond your hand.
Thank you that you go with me – not later, but now.
Amen.

🔑 Key thought of the day
You may be foreign in the land – but never foreign in God’s presence.

🌿 Blessing to close
The God who preserved Joseph in Egypt,
who strengthened him even though he was alone,
who saw his faithfulness even when no one else noticed –
may this God also be with you.
May He fill you with courage when you feel foreign.
May He give you peace when your circumstances are loud.
May He bless your faithfulness, even when it remains unseen.
May He lead you step by step
into everything He has prepared for you.
May the God who walks with you,
wherever your path leads,
bless you.
Amen.
